The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is changing in several ways for the 2024-25 school year. Here are some of the main changes that you should know:
The FAFSA will open in December instead of October, giving applicants less time to complete it before state and institutional deadlines.
The FAFSA form will be shorter and simpler, with only 36 questions instead of 108.
The FAFSA will require both students and parents to create a Student Aid Account and an FSA ID before completing the form.
The FAFSA will use a new formula to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which will now be called the Student Aid Index (SAI).
The new formula will focus more on wealth than income, and will no longer consider the number of students in college from the same family.
The FAFSA will ask for the net worth of family farms and small businesses, which were previously excluded from the calculation.
The FAFSA will change the rules for divorced or separated parents, requiring only the parent who provided the most financial support in the last calendar year to complete the form.
These changes may affect your eligibility and amount of financial aid, so it is important to stay informed and plan ahead. You can find more information and details on the official FAFSA website or by clicking here: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) | USAGov
