AP tests refer to Advanced Placement exams administered by the College Board in the United States. These exams are typically taken by high school students who want to demonstrate their mastery of college-level material and potentially earn college credit (if they pass!).
During their high school years (typically junior and senior years), students have the opportunity to take AP exams in a variety of subjects. The number and types of exams available to a student will depend on their high school's course offerings and their own interests and strengths.
Typically, students will take AP exams after (or towards the end) completing the corresponding AP course in their high school. However, it is not required to take the course in order to take the exam, and some students may choose to self-study for an exam.
The AP exams themselves are typically offered in May and are administered over the course of several days. Each exam is typically three hours long, and consists of a combination of multiple choice and free-response questions that assess the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
The score a student receives on an AP exam is on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or higher considered passing. Depending on the policies of the college or university a student plans to attend, they may be eligible to receive college credit for a passing score on an AP exam.
